Need to get a big file to someone?

Just ran across a new (to me) site that can help out if you need to get a large file to someone else...

Megaupload.com lets you upload a file up to 500 Megabytes, and gives the user a link to download it. No more running into limits with mail servers!

Update - Dropload.com is another service that does the same thing.

How to keep up with dozens of websites

I've been using Bloglines for quite some time now, and I gotta say, it's an amazing way to keep up with tons of websites through a single interface.

Here's a great article that shows how bloglines can keep track of it all for you....

Don't want to give "the man" your email address?

Want to install that software, or read that webpage, but they require an email address? If you don't want to give it to them, but still need to get information from whatever they are going to send you, here's a great solution:

DodgeIt is a site that just allows you to receive email from an anonymous account. Just tell them a made-up address like dontbotherme@dodgeit.com. Then go to DodgeIt, and type in that email. You can retrieve the email, and not be bothered by them again!

*updated* Spamhole.com is a similar site, but with this one, you create a temporary address that will forward to your regular email address for 2 hours. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds a bit better since people can't go fishing to read your email like they can on Dodgeit.

*updated again* pookmail.com is yet another site that is like DodgeIt. What's even better is that all emails to that account are deleted after 24 hours - so you don't ever leave any account details to others "fishing" for accounts, etc.

A new way of finding deals

Just found a new deal site that takes a bit different approach at finding good deals...

everydeal.com is primarily a site for Amazon deals, but it sorts the deals by the discount - so if something's 90% off, you'll know about it. It also lists items by lowest price, so if you bought something for $49.53 and need another item to be able to use a coupon with a $50 minimum, it's easy to find something here to just bump you above the minimum.

Where the heck did I put that?

If you ever couldn't find an email you needed to lookup, or that file you saved on your hard drive some time ago, there's a great new free utility that can help you out.

Google Desktop is a free utility from Google that will index your complete hard drive's files, email, and even AIM messages, and allow you to search that directly from Google.

No more waiting forever for the Windows or Outlook search utility to find what you're looking for. Searches are immediate, and the best thing about it is that it's free, and spyware free.

Give it a shot. You won't be able to live without it!

Quick virus removal

If you are pretty sure there's a virus on your system, and you haven't been running any antivirus software, there's a pretty good solution to at least get you partially repaired.

McAfee AVERT Stinger is a free, standalone program that can detect and remove about 45 of the most common viruses out there. It's nice and portable, so it's not a bad idea to keep it on your portable USB drive, just in case someone you know needs a quick scan/repair.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you fed a roll of toilet paper through a shredder or tried to cook an egg with a blow torch? Now you can stop wondering and watch the video.

If you don't want to give the New York Times your info....

If you're sick of having to register for certain sites that require you to login to read articles (New York Times, LA Times, etc.), then BugMeNot.com is for you. Just go there, put in the website name that you don't want to register for, and it will give you a username and password to use.

The best free web email....

GMail from Google is by far the best free web-based email around. It currently is open via invitation only, but will be fully public soon.

A few sites have people giving accounts away though. GMailSwap lets you offer items or services for an invitation, while GMailGiveaway is a daily drawing for one.

Free CD Burning software

CDBurnerXP Pro is a freeware CD burning software. Haven't used it yet, but it looks like it can work for most people's needs. Works on Windows XP and 2000, and says it may work on 98 and ME as well.

If you're a bit more technical, and want a somewhat more lightweight program, BurnAtOnce is another great alternative.

Free PC Firewall Software

If you're on a broadband connection, and not connected to a router (and even if you are), you should be running a software firewall.

ZoneAlarm has a free version that can protect you from attacks. This will save you a ton of headaches when the next worms come around...

Browser always pointing to Searchpage or Coolwebsearch??

Be sure to download and install CWShredder. This will remove the spyware causing this issue, and repair your browser.

Oh yeah, and NEVER say yes to installing something that pops up on a web page. Even if it tells you that they found a virus, you need to optimize your system, or that they'll keep your clock accurate forever. :)

Free Antivirus software

If you have an old version of Antivirus software or are brave(dumb?) enought to not run one at all, this is for you. AVG Antivirus Free Edition is a complete Antivirus solution, and it's totally free. It also will automatically update itself, without expiring like all the pay ones do. Install and run it today!

Spyware Protection Links

Here are a few of the best Spyware protection apps:

1) Ad-aware
2) Spybot Search & Destroy
3) SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster
